It is an offence for a supplier to sell you goods - whether new or second-hand - unless they are safe. But this does not apply to antiques or to goods needing repair or reconditioning, provided you were clearly informed of this fact.
If new goods turn out to be unsafe, you may have a legal claim against the manufacturer.
