How can we help you...

Mother and baby Aberdeen City Council recognises Gypsies/Travellers as a marginalised, vulnerable group who historically have experienced discrimination and disadvantage, and so we seek to balance the needs of the Gypsies/Travellers with those of the local settled community and businesses.

We are aware of well-documented issues around Gypsies/Travellers concerning poor health, low literacy skills, isolation, mental health, living with fear of constant eviction, experience of not being listened to, bullying and
harassment in schools, and discrimination from the settled community.

There is one official site in the area located at Clinterty, near the border with Aberdeenshire, which provides 21 pitches in total.

There is a Gypsy/Traveller developed private site at Pitmedden Road near Dyce. There are around 15 plots on the site, which are sold to each occupant who is responsible for their individual plot. These can then be sublet.

Because there is a nationwide shortage of official pitches, many Gypsies/Travellers are on the roadside because there is nowhere else for them to go. We regularly have to manage a situation of unauthorized encampments and promote good relations between different community groups.

Following on from the Craigforth Accommodation needs assessment of Gypsies/Travellers in Grampian, proposals will be included in the draft Local Development Plan for Gypsy/Traveller Accommodation. The proposal plan is being reported to full Council on 18 August 2010.  To view the Equality and Human Rights Impact Assessment reviewing an earlier proposal to develop short-term halting sites, please click: The Equality & Human Rights Impact Assessment on Short Term Halting Sites.
