Secondary School Work Placements

The Work Experience Unit exists solely to co-ordinate the Aberdeen City Schools’ “Work Experience Programme” which provides pupils with first hand experience of the world of work. This programme is valued extremely highly by the pupils, school staff and the local companies that regularly welcome our young people into their organisational environments.

The service works across all business sectors within Aberdeen City in order to try and provide pupils with the types of experience that they have requested.

Basic facts about the Work Experience Programme:

• Each year the Work Experience Unit is required to find suitable placements for over 2000 pupils.
• All pupils entering their final year of compulsory education can be offered a week placement as part of their school curriculum.
• Every secondary school within the city will send either its third or fourth year classes out on work experience for 5 days each year.
• There is a constant need to expand the number and variety of companies participating.
• Additional placements for pupils can be negotiated at the discretion of the service.
• All placements are vetted by staff qualified to NEBOSH Certificate level (a health and safety qualification).
