Moses Hamborg studied at the Florence Academy of Art Drawing and Painting and has most recently gradated from the Charles H. Cecil Studios, Florence.
The portrait is of Kumba, a neighbour of the artist in Sierra Leone where he has moved with his partner to live closer to her family. As they asked friends and relatives if they would be willing to sit for portraits, it occurred to Hamborg that they had started a series of depictions of Kumba’s family. Hamborg says: ‘There was a quality of timidity to her, that feeling of uncertainty about the future that one has in adolescence, but she carried herself with a relaxed and balanced sense of dignity – it was calming.’
