Kevin M.A. Cunningham gained a BA (Hons) degree in illustration from Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art, Dundee. His work has been seen in the annual exhibitions of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Scottish Academy, and he had his first solo exhibition in London in 2008. Cunningham was previously selected for the BP Portrait Award in 1994, 1995 and 2003, winning second prize in 1997.

The self-portrait is described by the artist as a depiction of the loneliness of working as an artist. Through the open windows, the viewer can see some of Cunningham’s ‘most treasured items’. His easel was a gift from his parents and he regards the portrait as ‘a homage to my artistic heroes, Vincent van Gogh, Michelangelo and Vermeer’.
