Richard Wilson is a self-taught artist and muralist. This is the frst time his work has been formally exhibited.
The portrait is of the artist’s friend, Obi. Wilson says: ‘Obi is a singer/songwriter, and I’m fascinated by the process of songwriting. I love how a songwriter can put their thoughts down on paper and turn it into song, and how we can often listen to songs and feel the writer must have written it solely for us when most likely that wasn’t the case at all. At some stages during the sittings Obi had been writing in her book which was important, particularly as I felt the fnal painting showed her to be in a contemplative moment.’
