What is art and why does it matter? The study of Art History can tell us so much about the world around us, from our sense of identity to society and the environment. Join Dr Hans Hones of the University of Aberdeen for three mornings of informal discussions and activities exploring art history themes that can help us understand the human experience.
Programme
Over the three morning sessions there will be a mixture of seminar-style discussions and practical activities:
Session 1: Who am I?
From oil portraits to Instagram: why are we so keen to present the world with an (idealised?) image of ourselves? Explore how art has been used to shape and express identities – conventional or queer, rebellious or conforming.
Session 2: What is an artist?
Is ‘real’ art all about self-expression and authenticity? Or are artists often confined (and limited) by the social and economic norms of the time they live in?
Session 3: Art and environment
In this time of environmental crisis, how can art help us make sense of our place in the world? Explore some ways art can help us reflect on and understand current ecological changes and imagine a more sustainable future.
You don’t have to know much about art to enjoy these sessions – they are open to pupils of Aberdeen schools age aged 15-18. They may be of special interest if you’re studying Art & Design or History, or planning to study Art and Social History.
