Where words fail, art and music speak

Funded by a gift from Annie, Viscountess Cowdray, who wanted to encourage ‘a taste for art and music in the City of Aberdeen’, the Cowdray Hall was opened in 1925 by King George V and Queen Mary. Over the years renowned local, national and international musicians have performed there.

“John Forbes White [one of Aberdeen Art Gallery’s original Founders] was my maternal great-great-great grandfather. I understand that he was studying medicine in Edinburgh when his father died, and he returned to Aberdeen to take over the family flour milling business. It was by chance that I came to live in Aberdeen three years ago and I have been really interested to find out more about my ancestors here. I was delighted to discover the family connection to Aberdeen Art Gallery. I’m supporting the fundraising appeal by buying a Cowdray Hall Musical Chair in honour of John Forbes White.” Vicky Stables, donor
