Apply for sheltered housing

Amenity housing, sheltered housing and very sheltered housing all have special adaptations which make them suitable for older people to continue to live full and independent lives in their own homes for as long as possible. Which of these types of housing would best suit you depends on your age and your health.

Amenity Housing

Available to applicants aged 55+, who have been assessed as having health problems which are affected by their current living arrangements.

Amenity housing may have similar facilities to sheltered housing, but is not in a purpose-built complex and does not have common areas for tenants to gather, or a senior carer service.

Sheltered Housing

Sheltered properties have special facilities to make life more comfortable and safer for tenants, including a carer service.

They are intended for people of pensionable age who have been assessed as having significant health issues and adverse social circumstances which would be significantly improved by living in this type of housing.

Apply for Sheltered & Amenity Housing

To apply for sheltered & amenity housing, you need to register for a Housing Online account.

Before you can apply for sheltered & amenity housing you will first need to complete our Options Checker.  This will provide you with a better understanding of the housing options and support available to you.

Once you have completed the Options Checker you will be able to create a new housing application.

You can find guidance to register for a Housing Online account on our website.

You will be assessed by Aberdeen City Council's Housing Needs Assessment Team. The outcome of this assessment will determine if you qualify for Sheltered or Amenity housing.

Very Sheltered Housing

Very sheltered housing provides tenants with special facilities over and above those provided by sheltered housing to make life more comfortable and safer for the most vulnerable tenants, including a 24-hr carer service and the provision of a midday meal.

This type of housing is intended for people of pensionable age who have been assessed as having severe health issues and adverse social circumstances which would be significantly improved by living in this type of housing.

Applications for Very Sheltered Housing are assessed by the Very Sheltered Housing Panel to ensure applicants are supported to peruse the most suitable type of housing for their needs.

To apply for Very Sheltered Housing please liaise with your Care Manager who will support you with submitting an Aberdeen City Council housing application and presenting your application to the Very Sheltered Housing Panel.
