City ready to pay tribute to Her Majesty The Queen

Thousands of Aberdonians are expected to line city streets as they say pay their respects to Her Majesty The Queen as she makes her final journey south.  

 

The people of Aberdeen will have an opportunity to view the funeral cortege as it travels through the city as it makes it way from Balmoral to Edinburgh tomorrow. 

 

The Lord Provost of Aberdeen David Cameron in his role as Lord-Lieutenant will lead the city’s tribute to Her Majesty The Queen as the funeral cortege passes Duthie Park on Great Southern Road.  

 

The Lord-Lieutenant will be joined by the Co-Leaders of Aberdeen City Council, the Chief Executive, Elected Members, the Vice Lord-Lieutenant, Deputy Lieutenants and other distinguished guests. 

 

In order to safely facilitate this, Great Southern Road will be closed for the duration of the event.  People should also be aware Duthie Park will be closed from 6am until approximately 3pm. Members of the public are urged to pay their respects at their nearest, and safest, viewing point along the procession route. 

  

Key locations  

 

  • The cortege will follow the A93 at its boundary with Aberdeen on to North Deeside Road and travelling through Peterculter, Milltimber, Bieldside, and Cults. 
  • Proceeding along Great Western Road to its junction with Holburn Street.  
  • Turning right on to Holburn Street and travelling to the roundabout at its junction with Fonthill Road and Great Southern Road as it passes Duthie Park.   
  • Departure from Aberdeen will be via the southern side of the King George VI Bridge along Great Southern Road to the Stonehaven Road (A92).     

  

Key timings (approx.) 

 

  • 11am – the funeral cortege leaves the A93 and enters Aberdeen.  
  • 11.20am - 11.40am – Cortege expected to pass Great Southern Road. 
  • 11.40am – Funeral cortege departs from Aberdeen.  

 

Please note that all these times are estimated. 

     

Main viewing areas  

In order to safely facilitate the occasion, Great Southern Road will be closed for the duration of the event. Connecting roads, and other roads along the route, will remain open and extra care should be taken at all viewing areas.  

 

The whole of Duthie Park will be closed to the public from 6am tomorrow (Sunday 11 September) until 3pm approx; 

 

Pedestrians will have access to the event from the following locations:  

·    Holburn Street; 

·    Hardgate; 

·    Bloomfield Road; 

·    Gairn Terrace; 

·    Allenvale Road; 

·    Great Southern Road south of the River Dee; 

·    West Tullos Road; 

·    Provost Watt Drive; 

·    Murray Terrace 

·    Whinhill Road. 

 

Care should be taken at all viewing areas on the route as all roads (with the exception of Great Southern Road) will remain open before and after the cortege passes. 

 

Public parking  

There will be no public parking on both sides of the route and no parking facilities available within any road closure.   

Public Toilets 

There are no designated public toilet facilities along the procession route. 

Public Transport  

Members of the public are being encouraged to walk to or use public transport to reach the event area.

Great Southern Road / Duthie Park Area 

The following information relates specifically to the Great Southern Road / Duthie Park area: 

Duthie Park will be closed to the public from 6am until after the event has concluded. 

If the Great Southern Road viewing areas reach capacity, members of the public will be directed to other locations along the procession route. 

Temporary traffic restrictions 
To ensure public safety and to enable the funeral cortege to travel through Aberdeen, temporary road restrictions will be in place from 6am. 

Public Access Points 

This will be via controlled entry points from Holburn Junction, Whinhill Road, Murray Terrace and West Tullos Road junction at King George VI Bridge. 

Public parking  

There will be no public parking on both sides of the route and no parking facilities available within any road closure.    

Bag Searches 

Please note that bag searches will be carried out. 

Disabled Access 

Disabled viewing will be at the junction of Allenvale Road and Great Southern Road.  

Blue Badge disabled parking is available on the north side of Allenvale Road within the designated area.  This can be accessed from Hardgate and Crathie Terrace.   

 

Please note designated disabled viewing and parking is very limited and available on a first-come first-served basis. 

 

Public toilets      

Temporary toilets for public use will be situated at various locations in the Great Southern Road area.   

 

Further information 

Anyone travelling to the city, whether to pay their respects along the route or visiting for business or leisure, should consider the possible impact on their journey times and plan accordingly due to temporary traffic restrictions.
