An event to mark Holocaust Memorial Day will take place on Monday 27 January 2025 in the Cowdray Hall at Aberdeen Art Gallery.
Holocaust Memorial Day is held annually across the world to remember the six million Jews and other groups murdered under Nazi persecution, and more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
The date, 27 January, marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.
Aberdeen Lord Provost Dr David Cameron said: “Aberdeen quite rightly comes together every year to mark Holocaust Memorial Day as it is of great importance that we continue to remember the millions of victims and survivors of not only the Holocaust but also other genocides.
“This year’s Holocaust Memorial Day theme is ‘For a Better Future’, allowing us to look ahead to brighter futures in the hope of peace across many nations. I encourage people from all communities across our city, regardless of their faith or non-faith, to attend this very moving event.”
The day will begin with Marischal College being lit from the early hours in purple colours to represent the Holocaust Memorial flame.
The memorial event will start at 11.45am with a musical performance by Music 4 U before the formal part gets underway at 12noon, led by Tommy Campbell, member of Aberdeen Holocaust Memorial Committee.
The event will include a dance performance and readings from Holocaust survivor Chava Nissimov and pupils from Northfield Academy. It will conclude with a reflection from the Lord Provost.
The memorial event is due to finish around 1.15pm.
