Spectra 2023

Spectra Returns to Light-Up Aberdeen

Spectra, Scotland’s festival of light, returns to bring sparkle back to Aberdeen’s city centre again this evening with a stunning display of light installations.

Running until Sunday 12th February, visitors can enjoy spectacular installations at Marischal College, Aberdeen Art Gallery, and filling the newly refurbished Union Terrace Gardens.

This will be the first major event in the city centre park and will see it illuminated in every corner by the festival.

The festival, which is owned and commissioned by Aberdeen City Council and produced by Curated Place, features artwork and large-scale installations inspired by the theme of ‘Home’.

Installations will include towering figures descending on the city centre from Australian group Parer Studio and specially commissioned projections by Illuminos on Marischal College and His Majesty’s Theatre inspired by the North East.

A number of businesses in the city centre will also be staying open late with special offers and Spectra themed menu items to ensure that those exploring the festival can enjoy a hot drink and something to eat.

A partnership with First Bus has also seen discount codes sent out to Spectra attendees to encourage use of public transport, reducing traffic, and improving the environmental impact of the festival.

Councillor Martin Greig said: “The Spectra lightshow is a splendid community event that gives so much fun and enjoyment to many people of all ages.

“It is great to be able to offer this wide range of vibrant, sparkling exhibits that create such a festive atmosphere. The displays are imaginative and exciting and are a great form of entertainment for this time of year.”

Aberdeen City Council has invested over £250,000 in delivering the festival as well as securing additional funding from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund to further support the event, ensuring the city kicks off 2023 bathed in light, drawing thousands of visitors into the city centre to benefit local businesses and providing a high-quality free experience for families across the north-east.

A relaxed session will also be available on Sunday 12th February, run in partnership with WeToo, with access available during this session to sensory aids and a visual guide.

Spectra will run until Sunday evening from 6.30pm to 10pm each night and is free to attend. Plan your trip via the Spectra website.
