Health and Safety
What safety measures are in place?
There are a range of safety measures in place to ensure that Provost Skene’s House is a welcoming and safe place for visitors and staff, in line with Scottish Government guidance. This includes:
- Enhanced cleaning, including interactive exhibits and toilets
- Hand sanitising stations
- Additional COVID-19 health and safety training and provision for staff
Please do not visit Provost Skene’s House if you or anyone in your household has symptoms of Coronavirus.
We want you to have a safe and enjoyable visit. During your visit we ask you to:
- Wear a mandatory face-covering throughout the building. Children under 5 do not need to wear a face covering.
- Use the hand sanitiser provided
- Wash your hands often, and for a minimum of 20 seconds
- Use contactless payment
- If you have any questions our Museum Assistants will be pleased to help
What about Test and Protect?
To support NHS Scotland’s Test and Protect service we are recording the name, contact number and date of visit via the QR code. This information will be kept for 21 days. It will be used to enable NHS Scotland and statutory partners to contact anyone who has visited Provost Skene’s House around the same time as someone who tests positive for coronavirus. Contacting people who might have been exposed to the virus is an important step in stopping the spread.
Do I need to wear a face covering?
In line with Scottish Government guidance, face coverings must be worn in all parts of the building. Children under 5 are not required to wear a face covering.
Should I book my visit in advance?
No, you don't need to book in advance.
To support NHS Scotland's Test and Protect service we are recording the name, contact number and date of visit via the QR code which you scan at the entrance when you arrive.
Contact details for each household will be kept securely for 21 days in line with data protection legislation.

When you arrive at Provost Skene’s House
Can I park my car at Provost Skene’s House?
Provost Skene’s house is located in a pedestrian area and there is no on-street parking. The nearest car park is the NCP at Harriet Street, the Bon Accord shopping centre or Shiprow.

Can I park my bike at Provost Skene’s House?
Yes, there are bike racks adjacent to Provost Skene House. In the middle of the Marischal square development.
Which entrance do I use?
There is only one entrance to Provost Skene House. The door will be open, come on in.
What do I do when I arrive?
A member of the Provost Skene’s House team will ask you to scan the NHS Scotland's Test and Protect service QR code.
Will there be queues?
We anticipate that the house will be busy during the first few weeks of opening (which also coincides with local school holidays), and our staff will do their best to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit for everyone.
How long can I stay?
You can stay as long as you like (but we’ll ask you to leave at closing time!)
How do I find my way around?
If you have any questions our Museums Assistants will be very happy to help.
What's open?
Which parts of Provost Skene’s House will be open?
All areas will be open.

What is there for children to do at Provost Skene’s House?
As well as lots of fascinating facts to read in 10 themed displays, there are loads of things to listen to and watch, as well as heaps of hands-on activities for children (and their adults!).
Toilets, facilities and access
Are the toilets open?
Yes. Some toilets may be closed at times throughout the day for regular cleaning.
And the buggy park?
Due to the historic nature of the house we are sorry that the upper floors of the building are not accessible to visitors with buggies. There is a small buggy park which can accommodate two buggies.
