City Libraries celebrate Book Week Scotland with events for all ages

Aberdeen City Libraries are taking part in Book Week Scotland, the annual celebration of books and reading that takes place from 14 to 20 November with a series of events that will appeal to all ages.

The theme for 2022 is Scotland's Stories and during the week people young and old can come together to share the joy of reading as Aberdeen City Libraries joins in the national celebrations with a programme of free author events and activities.

This year’s fantastic events include:

An Eye to the Hills with Cameron McNeish

Wednesday 16 November at Aberdeen Central Library 6.00pm – 7.30pm

For the past 40 years, acclaimed author and journalist Cameron McNeish has been chronicling Scotland's stunning hills and landscapes as well as the people who live, work and play in them.

In An Eye to the Hills, the third in his ‘Hills’ trilogy of mountain memoirs, Cameron takes us on a journey through our incredible mountains, showing how much has changed, and yet how much has stayed the same. The illustrated talk will take a fascinating look at Scotland’s mountains and reveal more about the inspiration and joy they can bring to the many people who love our great outdoors.

The event will include a Q&A session followed by a book sale and signing. Spaces at this free event are limited so booking is essential.

The author said “An Eye to The Hills is the final part of my trilogy of mountain memoirs and is probably the most important. This book is a love letter to the hills and mountains of Scotland, a longstanding relationship that has changed my life for the better and I look forward to sharing it with the people of Aberdeen during Book Week Scotland”.

Animators Assemble
Friday 18 November at Tillydrone Library, 2pm to 3.30pm

Fans of animated favourites such as Shaun the Sheep or Wallace & Gromit can get creative and spend the November Inservice Day becoming animators for the afternoon. Children can come and learn how to use stop-motion animation and create their own animation on the day. Suitable for children aged 8 years and older.

Finding the Stories We Have to Tell with Wayne Price

Saturday 19 November, 11.00am to 12.30pm, Central Library

This is a special one- off creative writing workshop led by Aberdeen University Lecturer and local writer Wayne Price. Helping participants develop their creative writing skills, Wayne will share his knowledge and experience and explore creative writing tips and techniques to help participants find their own stories to tell.

The workshop is open to anyone aged 16 or over.

Aberdeen City Council’s culture spokesman, Councillor Martin Greig said: ““The wide range of activities and talks is a great way to encourage people into the wonderful world of books. Book Week Scotland is an excellent initiative for people of all ages, especially young people. It is great that local libraries are able to offer these exciting opportunities of reading and storytelling. The chance to hear and speak to authors will be especially enjoyable. Almost everyone will be able to relate to the central theme of Scottish stories.”

In addition to the author events, there will also be events and activities for children and young people including In Person Bookbug sessions and social media activities for all ages.

Spaces at all these free events are limited so booking is essential.
