Report a food hygiene problem

We work with businesses to make sure they comply with the relevant food safety laws.

The areas of work that we are involved in are:

  • Food hygiene inspections
  • Food standards inspections
  • Investigation of cases of illness where a food premises is implicated
  • Food sampling
  • Investigation of food complaints e.g. foreign bodies found in food
  • Watering and/or substitution of alcoholic drinks

Advice is available to both businesses and members of the public on all aspects of food safety. For information about food safety training, see the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS) website or phone the REHIS on 0131 229 2968.

We do not provide food shelf life testing, you should contact a private laboratory for this kind of service.

You can report food safety issues online or by contacting the Environmental Health service. We will investigate the complaint within two working days. If the problem is with food you have purchased, if possible keep chilled items in the fridge or freeze the food if it is an issue with a foreign body.
