On-street parking

If you are looking for a place to park your car in Aberdeen, you have several options to choose from. Depending on your location and duration, you can find a parking solution for your needs.

Blue Badge holders displaying their blue badges correctly can park for free in certain areas, including:

  • at on-street parking meters
  • in pay and display bays
  • in disabled parking spaces
  • on single and double yellow lines if it's safe to do so and there are no loading restrictions

There are a number of different ways that you can pay for your parking. You can find out more information on these below.

Cashless parking

In August 2024 PayByPhone and RingGo became the cashless parking providers in Aberdeen.

PayByPhone and RingGo offer motorists a quick and easy means of payment to the existing pay and display machines by paying via your mobile phone. Both services are now available in all on-street parking bays or where indicated in car parks.

There are no convenience charges for using either service, the cost of a cashless parking session will be the same as using a parking meter.

Calls to the provider will be charged the standard rate agreed with your mobile phone operator. Such calls are often included free in mobile phone packages, so if you get free minutes, your call will usually be included in this.

Please be aware of scams involving fake QR codes on parking meters. Recent scams across the country have seen fake QR codes places on parking signage and meters that once scanned takes the user to fraudulent websites that takes their details and payment.

We don’t have QR codes on any of our machines across the city.

PayByPhone

You can register with PayByPhone either by downloading the PayByPhone smartphone app free of charge from the relevant store or at PayByPhone Register.

When you register for the service you will be asked to provide:

  • The number plate, colour and make of your vehicle.
  • Your payment card details.

You can also register at the same time you want to park, using the PayByPhone app or by calling 01224 440871.

The PayByPhone service includes the following features:

  • Optional SMS reminders and receipts.
  • Email receipts
  • VAT receipts
  • Countdown timer on the app
  • The option to extend parking (within parking restrictions)
  • Multiple vehicles and cards added on to one account

Using PayByPhone

Once you have registered, PayByPhone recognises your mobile phone number and retrieves information you have given previously. This means that when you pay you only have to give:

  • The location code for where you are parked.
Each area offering PayByPhone has its own six-digit location number, which will be signposted. See all PayByPhone location codes.
  • How long you want to park for.
  • The 3-digit security code from your payment card.

The PayByPhone web page provides further information, as well as demonstration videos that are available on Youtube on how to use the App and service.

PayByPhone have also developed a self-service support centre on their website.

You can find out more on the PayByPhone website.

Meters For Trees

Meters for Trees is based on a very simple principle: replacing parking meters with trees through PayByPhone.

Not only does cashless parking save money through theft; but improves air quality by removing the need for vehicles drive all over town collecting cash from the machines and maintaining them when they break or are vandalised. Either way, clocking up miles and releasing harmful carbon dioxide into the air.

Via this programme PayByPhone donate 65 trees yearly and has offset 65 tonnes of carbon dioxide through Portel-Pará REDD, a Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) audited project in the Amazon rainforest that combats deforestation.

RingGo

How to use RingGo

You can register with RingGo by downloading the free RingGo onto your smartphone app via the App Store or Google Play Store free of charge.

Once downloaded onto your smartphone you will be asked to register a few details. When you park, you will need to:

  • Confirm your vehicle registration number (with no spaces)
  • Enter the five or six-digit location number shown on the signage
  • Select how long you want to stay
  • Confirm your payment details

If your parking is running out, you can extend the time wherever you are by using the RingGo app. Select your current parking session from the sessions tab and the app will ask how long you want to extend by. Choose a time, confirm and your parking is extended.

VAT receipts can be viewed and downloaded via the RingGo website.

Reminders will alert you when your parking is due to run out.

If you don't have a smartphone, you can still use RingGo by calling 01224 510510.

You can also watch a YouTube tutorial on how to use RingGo or visit the RingGo help centre.

For a full detailed list of places where you can park locally with RingGo, please see the RingGo app or visit the RingGo website

VAT receipts

If you need a VAT receipt for your PayByPhone or RingGo parking sessions, you can view and print it online by logging into the PayByPhone website or RingGo website.

Telephone payments

You can also pay for your parking via telephone. To do so, call 01224 440871 for PayByPhone or 01224 510510 for RingGo.

Parking meters

There are a number of parking meters at various locations across the city. You should have the correct coins available to pay for your parking as the machines do not provide change.

If our parking meters are not working, you can use cashless parking, call PayByPhone or pay at the nearest PayPoint.

Report parking meter faults

If a parking meter is faulty, please use another parking meter with the same tariff and purchase a parking ticket, or use the RingGo or PayByPhone apps. You can purchase your parking session using the PaybyPhone or RingGo app on your smart device, online, or by phone.

To report damage to a parking meter or any other fault, please use our online form. We will send someone to address the problem as soon as we can.

PayPoint

You can pay for parking by cash at any shop in Aberdeen displaying the PayPoint logo. There are over 100 Paypoint locations in convenience stores, newsagents, supermarkets, and petrol stations across Aberdeen.

Find your nearest PayPoint location

If you wish to pay for your parking at a PayPoint location, you should visit the nearest shop with a PayPoint logo and ask to pay for parking. You will have to give the retailer the following details:

  • your vehicle registration,
  • the 6 digit location code where your vehicle is parked (this is displayed on parking meters), and
  • the time you wish to park for.

The cashier will process the fee and you can pay using any payment accepted in the store.

Please keep the receipt provided, as this gives proof of payment and details of the session booked.

There is no parking ticket to display, so you don't need to return to your vehicle.
