Supporting good practice with care experienced children in custody
The Children and Young People’s Centre for Justice (CYCJ), in collaboration with the Scottish Child Law Centre, has produced a new resource to support Scottish solicitors and practitioners with Good Practice Principles when representing care experienced children in police custody, to ensure their rights are upheld.
‘Representing care experienced children & young people in police custody: A good practice guide’ also includes advice for children and young people to help them know what their rights are, and what they are entitled to, in police custody. This guide was co-produced with care/justice experienced young people.

A Guide to Youth Justice In Scotland
The Centre for Child and Youth Justice has a comprehensive guide to Youth Justice in Scotland. https://www.cycj.org.uk/resource/youth-justice-in-scotland/
This guide comprises 15 chapters and is aimed at practitioners and managers who work with children and young people who are or at risk of being in conflict with the law. It is also useful for academics, educators and anyone else with an interest in youth and criminal justice.
Improving the life chances of children who offend: A summary of common factors
‘Improving the life chances of children who offend: A summary of common factors’ aims to support all practitioners, managers and policy makers involved in improving the life chances of children.
The paper, which was first published in October 2019, was produced by the Improving Life Chances Implementation Group on behalf of the Youth Justice Improvement Board, which was responsible for supporting the Scottish Government’s 2015-2020 youth justice strategy Preventing Offending: Getting it right for children and young people. - CYCJ
FASD and young people in conflict with the law
People with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) are disproportionally represented within the criminal justice system, and the care-experienced community. In addition, they face many challenges, as FASD is difficult to diagnose or understand – despite it being most common known cause of neuro-developmental disability and birth defects in the western world. It is thought that 1 in 20 people in Scotland could have FASD. This info sheet from CYCJ gives an overview of the features and symptoms of FASD to be aware of, and the types of support youth justice practitioners can give to young people with FASD who are in the justice system
