£5 million Greenbrae School extension opens
07 February 2017
The £5 million extension to Greenbrae School in the Bridge of Don opened today (Tuesday 7 February) in a special ceremony. Doing the honours were Bridge of Don Councillor and Aberdeen City Council Finance Convener Willie Young, Councillor Angela Taylor, Education and Children’s Services Convener and Head Teacher Miss Anna Royle.
The two-storey building is one of the largest school extensions in Aberdeen and means that Greenbrae now has spaces for 330 pupils and an additional 80 nursery places.
Councillor Young said: “It’s great that we can now see for ourselves the end result of our decision in 2015 to expand Greenbrae School. This is another major investment in our schools estate and our planning ahead ensures that we are able to cater for the increased school-age population in the Bridge of Don area resulting from housing developments in the area.
“Our children deserve the best educational facilities possible and the Greenbrae extension offers just that.”
Head Teacher, Anna Royle said: “All pupils, parents and staff are delighted to have reached the completion stage of our new school extension and refurbishment.
“We all appreciate wholeheartedly how fortunate we are to have these fabulous new facilities in which to carry out our Learning and Teaching from within.
“There is no doubt that our now cutting edge technology, new facilities and space will provide a platform for the children in which to enjoy rich learning experiences. We are all very excited and feel very privileged.”
Robertson Construction was appointed by Aberdeen City Council to carry out work to extend the school. Keith Taylor, managing director, Robertson Construction Eastern Ltd, said: “This has been an exciting build to be involved with, where keeping the school operational and safe was a key priority, and it is encouraging to see it will have a positive impact on many children in and around Bridge of Don.”
The ground floor of the extension includes classrooms, a games hall, a medical room and dining facilities. A library and new toilets for both pupils and staff has also been created.
The first floor consists of classrooms as well as another medical room.
