Aberdeen City Libraries look to the future with ‘Design a Library’ competition

As part of Aberdeen City Libraries ongoing 125 Celebrations marking the 125th anniversary of Aberdeen Central Library, children and young people are being asked to design a 21st century library for Aberdeen.
Children and young people between the ages of 3 and 18 are being asked to design their very own Aberdeen library for the future which can be submitted in the form of an illustration, 3D model or written description.
Designs will be judged on the exterior design, interior design and vision of the future.
Councillor Marie Boulton, cultural spokesperson for Aberdeen City Council, said: “We have had a fabulous celebration throughout the summer of our much loved Central Library which has gone through many changes throughout its 125 years.
“The way that people read and use services and resources is constantly evolving and our libraries evolve with them. What better way to end our summer of celebrations than by asking our youngest library users to come up with ideas on how the library might develop over the next 125 years?”

Susan Bell, Service Development Manager for Aberdeen City Libraries, is looking forward to seeing what ideas people come up with. She said “This is a great way to bring our 125 Festival to a close and look ahead to what our future library service will look like and the range of services it will offer.”
The entries will be judged by Mark Chalmers. Mark is a writer and photographer who trained as an architect. He helped to build an oil company HQ, the Falkirk Wheel, and a whisky distillery - and he has been a regular contributor to "Leopard" magazine for the past 12 years, writing a number of articles about the central library.
The closing date of the competition is 28th October 2017 and the winners will be announced during Book Week Scotland (27th November – 2nd December).
Prizes are on offer and the winning designs will be displayed in Aberdeen City Libraries.
