Aberdeen artists awarded new commissions

04 July 2017

Aberdeen City Council have announced the latest recipients of a series of artist commissions for Aberdeen’s creative hub, Seventeen, on Belmont Street.

Sara Stroud, Megan Falconer, Harmony Bury, and Shirin Karbor and Rachel Logan have all been awarded a £2000 commission to produce new work for the city centre art space.

The work will include illustrative children’s books inspired by the Aberdeen Bestiary, silverwork crafted using custom tools inspired by North-East geology, photography mixed with sculpture exploring our relationship with the environment, and films of Aberdeen residents discussing their relationship with the city they call home.

Announcing the awards, Councillor Marie Boulton said: “We’re delighted to continue providing opportunities for Aberdeen artists to create new work and develop their skills while keeping that talent in the city. Showcasing their work in the window space at Seventeen will provide a great boost to these artists locally and I can’t wait to see what they produce.”

Megan Falconer was thrilled to receive a commission: "I am absolutely delighted to be awarded a Seventeen commission as it gives me the opportunity to develop my work and showcase it within Aberdeen. The funding will allow me to explore new skills and experiment with techniques within my practise, allowing me to develop as a contemporary designer.”

Seventeen is a creative hub in the heart of the city, located in the previous One Up Records shop on Belmont Street. It has two exhibition spaces, offices and a meeting room. Seventeen is also home to MAKE Aberdeen, a digital fabrication studio run by RGU.

The first commission by Megan Falconer, will be displayed in August. Visit http://www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/community_life_leisure/arts/culture/seventeen.asp for more information.
