Activity challenge inspiring the next generation as Great Aberdeen Run countdown continues
05 July 2019
The Simplyhealth Great Aberdeen Run is helping to inspire the city’s next generation to live a healthy lifestyle as the countdown to this year’s event continues.
The run, now in its third year, will return on Sunday 25 August, offering participants the choice of a 10k or half marathon route as well as a family fun run.
As part of the build-up, children are being invited to run anywhere at any time to conquer the Aberdeen Activity Challenge.
The fun non-competitive challenge is to complete the half marathon course, one run at a time. A tracker is available to download, and each time a run is completed participants colour in the section on their activity tracker until they reach the finish line.
Once the challenge has been completed a certificate can be downloaded to recognise the achievement. Challenge participants who also take part in the family run on 25 August will be offered a special prize.
Councillor Marie Boulton, Aberdeen City Council’s culture spokesperson, said: “Sport and culture is so important to the city and we are looking forward to the Great Aberdeen Run’s return.
“The Aberdeen Activity Challenge is a great opportunity to really get the whole family involved and I’m sure it will be popular over the summer holidays.
“We hope to see as many young people as possible signing up for the challenge and also taking part in the family run, offering the unique experience of sampling the city centre course.”
The challenge complements the 10k, Family Run and Aberdeen’s only city centre half marathon with thousands of people expected to pound the pavements of the Granite City for fun, fitness and fundraising.
Cllr Boulton added: “Aberdeen is a dynamic city which offers a great deal for both residents and visitors. We are making a concerted effort to raise the city’s profile through our ambitious events programme.
“The Great Aberdeen Run is one of many events on our summer schedule and is part of our wider Aberdeen 365 events strategy, a City Centre Masterplan initiative, which will see events such as The Tour of Britain bringing the streets of Aberdeen to life”.
The Simplyhealth Great Aberdeen Run is staged by the organisers of the Simplyhealth Great North Run, the world’s biggest half marathon.
It is delivered in partnership with Aberdeen City Council, VisitAberdeenshire, Aberdeen Inspired, Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce and is supported by the Aberdeen City Centre Masterplan.
