Airyhall pupils star in new road safety film

Three new films on road safety, starring, inspired and partly created by Airyhall School pupils had a special premiere on Friday 30 September.

The films were the centrepieces of a series of events at the school over the last few weeks teaching the youngsters the importance of road safety. Other events included a Road Safety Magic Show and Absafe coming to talk to the whole school.

The youngsters got to see their efforts on screen in a special launch alongside filmmakers, Adam James-Johnston and Corina Andrian, who study at Robert Gordon University.

Also in attendance were Councillor Angela Taylor, Convener of the Education and Children’s Services committee and Sergeant Douglas Norrie of Police Scotland whose team recently worked with pupils to educate drivers about the dangers of speeding past the school.

Head Teacher Alison Thomson said: “We are very excited about the launch of our very own Speed Campaign films. They were created in collaboration with Robert Gordon University and pupils from our school.

“The video gives important road safety messages and encourages both motorists and pupils to make informed choices. It is also aimed at commuters driving past the school as well as parents and school visitors”.

Councillor Taylor said: “The pupils along with Adam and Corina, deserve a lot of credit for their collaborative efforts which have resulted in such great work.

“As well as being very good films they each have important safety messages for young and old alike and I hope they get as wide an audience as possible”.

Film maker Adam James-Johnston was full of praise for the Airyhall youngsters. He said: “It was inspirational working with the children. Even at such a young age, they knew exactly what they wanted to say in the videos. It was just a really rewarding experience.”

Sergeant Norrie was also looking forward to seeing the videos for the first time. He said: “It will be really interesting to see the videos. I’m sure that they will reinforce road safety which is a Police Scotland priority.”
