Christmas jobs fair aims to promote vacancies across the city

This Wednesday hundreds of job hunters are expected to attend a Christmas Jobs Fair, the first of its kind to take place in the city since 2010.
The event, hosted by Aberdeen City Council, is a joint initiative between the Department for Work and Pensions and the Progress Through Positive Partnerships project, and is set to showcase more than 30 employers promoting over 100 job opportunities.
The list of employers in attendance has continued to grow in recent weeks and now includes The Range, Tesco, Donald Russel, Premier Inn, Yodel and G1 Group, as well as already confirmed Marks & Spencer, First Bus, Stagecoach, Debenhams, Compass Group, Primark and more.
The Jobs Fair, which will be held at the Town House from 10am – 1pm on Wednesday 18 October, will see both seasonal and permanent roles on offer.
Councillor Yvonne Allan, Aberdeen City Council’s Communities, Housing and Infrastructure convener said: “A prosperous future for Aberdeen is reliant on giving each individual the best opportunity to fulfil their potential and improve their lives.”
Progress Through Positive Partnerships keyworkers will also be at the fair and will be seeking to sign up participants for the project. Part-funded by the European Structural Fund (ESF), the project, which forms part of the City Centre Masterplan, is designed to provide participants with support and tailored assistance to develop employment and vocational skills.
Councillor Allan is keen for individuals and businesses to support this project to ensure investment in people to develop the city’s workforce.
Councillor Yvonne Allan added: “Progress Through Positive Partnerships will see Aberdeen City Council work in partnership with a range of training and development organisations to provide increased employability services and positive outcomes across the city. It will improve the co-ordination of service provision and ensure that those in need of it receive local support tailored specifically to address their individual needs.”
Partnership Manager Kirsty Jarmin from the Department for Work and Pensions said: “There’s a great deal of excitement among city employers about this Christmas Jobs Fair. It’s the first one to take place in Aberdeen for a number of years and we’ve had a great response from businesses which want to be a part of this partnership event between DWP and Aberdeen City Council. The event has attracted some major organisations which are keen to recruit new staff.
This is a great opportunity for anyone looking for work in Aberdeen at the moment. The companies coming along are all looking to recruit staff, some on a temporary basis over Christmas, but many also have permanent jobs on offer.”
