City schools to benefit from Scottish Library Improvement Fund

Two Aberdeen primary schools are to benefit from the latest round School Library Improvement Fund (SLIF) awards it was announced today (Wednesday 4 March)
Countesswells and Kittybrewster schools are sharing in the £272,000 being distributed to school library projects across Scotland.
Countesswells Primary School was awarded funding for their Book Blethers project. The aim of the project is to raise attainment in reading as well as encouraging parental engagement and family learning.
Kittybrewster Primary School was awarded funding for their project entitled Developing A Love of Reading! The project aims to develop a culture of reading, creating joy, pleasure and lifelong enthusiastic learners with a whole school focus from children age 3-11-years-old.
Education Operational Convener, Councillor John Wheeler, said: “My congratulations go out to the staff at both schools on their well-deserved funding awards. These are two really creative projects that I’m sure will catch the imaginations of pupils, parents and teachers alike and help encourage a lifelong love of reading among our younger children”.
Countesswells School Head Teacher Paula Rough said “We were absolutely delighted to get the news of our successful SLIF bid. It is a huge boost for us as a new school. Our ‘Book Blethers’ is a two-part project firstly centring around fostering a love of reading for pleasure within our pupils and secondly developing family learning at home. We are excited to start putting our plans into motion and seeing the positive impact it will have on our learners.”
Elizabeth Maguire, Acting Principle Teacher, said: “Kittybrewster School is delighted to have been awarded the grant to develop a culture of reading in the school. The money will support us to enrich pupils’ experiences and help us close the poverty related attainment gap.”
All projects were assessed to meet the aims of Scotland’s national school library strategy, Vibrant Libraries, Thriving Schools. The School Library Improvement Fund, introduced in 2017, supports creative and innovative projects within the school library sector and is administered by the Scottish Library and Information Council on behalf of the Scottish Government.
