Closures as part of reconstruction works for Rob Roy Bridge

A historic bridge which is having a £530,000 reconstruction is to be closed overnight on two separate dates and a weekend to allow equipment to be moved for the final stages of the project.

Traffic going over Rob Roy Bridge in Peterculter will be diverted to alternative routes while the essential work takes place.

The reconstruction works started on the bridge in June and they are required to safeguard its future structural stability.

The original masonry arch is circa 1800 and the arch beam/column north section is circa 1920.

The works involve the demolition of the reinforced concrete section of the bridge, which will be rebuilt to modern standards. During the whole of the contract, there will be traffic lights in operation.

The work includes the partial demolition of the bridge, and as such it will be required to be closed in order to remove and install equipment in order to move on to the next phase of the project.

Diversion signs will be in place to advise alternate route via the B9077 South Deeside Road.

The closure dates are:

Sunday 2 October – 6am to 8pm; Saturday 22 October 6am to Monday 24th October 5am; Friday 28 October 7pm to Monday 31st October 5am.

Aberdeen City Council Transport and Regeneration spokesman Councillor Ross Grant said: “We hope to avoid as much disruption as possible and will aim to open the bridge earlier if all goes to plan.

“Due to the complex nature of the work and that it is a very restricted site, it will be necessary to have complete closures at times and the intention is to limit these to weekends.

“We appreciate people’s patience while the works are being carried out.”

Emergency vehicles will be able to cross under supervision when the bridge is closed and pedestrians will be allowed across at all times for access to, for example, the restaurant.

The works to the bridge were coordinated to take place at the same time along with the programme of works for the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route to keep disruption to the travelling public to a minimum.

The dates for the closures are subject to change.
