Copper clad roof garden takes shape as ambitious redevelopment work reaches another milestone

The Aberdeen Art Gallery redevelopment has reached yet another milestone as all the copper-clad plates were installed on the new roof-top gallery. 

More than 270 copper panels were installed as work continues on the ambitions £30million renovations which will create an temporary exhitibtion space to house national and international works of art while overlooking the Granite City. 

Visitors to the gallery will also benefit from a top-floor cafe with outdoor terraces offering stunning vistas of the city skyline. 

Aberdeen City Council Deputy Leader Councillor Marie Boulton said: "The rose copper was very thoughtfully chosen as a statement bringing the old and the new together. Now that it's been fitted, it is clear it also links very well with the rose granite. 

"I think the people of Aberdeen will see this space as an architectural landmark for many years to come. 

"We know that people like to appreciate art in many different ways - scultpure, paint and word - all of which will be displayed here, including music performances. 

"But we have also created a place the is open and welcoming to all in Aberdeen to enjoy and experience. 

"There are those who may come to enjoy the interactive displays, internationally-renowned paintings or an educational workshop. 

"And there are those who may come in just for a coffee and to sit in sun, enjoying the atmostphere and the views."

The gallery is being transformed into a modern attraction with 21 exhibition spaces as well as a complete reimagining of the Remembrance Hall which will feature digital displays and a specially commissioned artwork.
