Council approves changes to schools boundaries

26 January 2017

Aberdeen City Council today (Thursday 26 January) approved two proposals to rezone existing boundaries for five Aberdeen schools.

The Education and Children’s Services committee rubber stamped the rezoning proposals - which also received the backing of Education Scotland - following a period of statutory consultation in which no adverse comment was received.

The first of the changes will see, from 1 August 2017, the removal of an area of dual school zoning for Fernielea School and Hazlehead School. The area will be included within the zone for Hazlehead School only.

The second change, also commencing on 1 August 2017, adjusts the school zone boundaries for Fernielea School, Kingswells School, Hazlehead Academy and the new Countesswells secondary school to provide for an amended catchment area resulting from the Maidencraig housing development.

Councillor Angela Taylor, Education and Children’s Services Committee Convener, said: “These are important changes in line with this council’s vision to improve the learning opportunities and better outcomes for all our children.

“The Education Scotland report on the proposals was supportive of these important changes. They agreed that the changes will bring educational benefits as well as maintaining close links for the schools with their communities by having children attend the school geographically closest to where they live.”
