Council recognised as Super Local Authority for environmental activities

Aberdeen City Council has been recognised as a Super Local Authority by the WWF Scotland, the world’s leading independent conservation organisation, for its commitment and contribution to the annual Earth Hour events that took place in 2016.

Activities including tree planting at Hazlehead Park, environmental exhibits, talks and discussion groups, and a series of environmental films shown across the city helped to secure the success of the Aberdeen application for the award, along with Hazlehead Park being recognised as Scotland’s first climate change park.

Councillor Jean Morrison, Vice-Convenor of Aberdeen City Council Communities Housing and Infrastructure Committee said: “Being recognised as a Super Local Authority is a huge achievement that demonstrates the commitment of Council staff and other stakeholders in ensuring Aberdeen is a green and sustainable place.

“Hazlehead Park is leading the way nationally for climate change, having been recognised as having the potential for the development of sustainability projects within the park such as, energy efficiency, waste management, and adaption for the effects of climate change.”

The award was presented to Councillor Laing by Scott Blance, Earth Hour Officer for WWF, along with the WWF mascot and Spotless the Leopard the Aberdeen City Council mascot.

Lang Banks, Director of WWF Scotland, said: “In naming Aberdeen City Council our Local Authority Earth Hour Champion, I’m absolutely delighted to be able to recognise the ongoing and fantastic commitment of the Council and its residents to protecting our brilliant planet. We look forward to working with our newly crowned Champions for Earth Hour 2017.”

Earth Hour activities for 2017 have already commenced and will conclude with the switch off of the lights at Marischal College, St Mark’s Church and the Wallace Monument at 8.30pm on Saturday 25 March.
