Council set to celebrate the city’s young carers with new award scheme
07 June 2021
This Wednesday (9 June) will see the first winner announced in a new Aberdeen City Council award scheme which celebrates local young people who have excelled as carers.
The Young Carers Recognition Scheme highlights the fantastic work of young unsung heroes across the city.
Council Leader, Councillor Jenny Laing, will select the overall winner from the final shortlist of three nominations in the inaugural awards, run in partnership with Barnados and Barclays. Barclays are providing the prize of a £100 Aberdeen Gift Card to the winner and a £50 Aberdeen Gift Card to each for the two runners up.
Councillor Laing who will also present the winner with their prize in an online ceremony, said: “We have a huge army of carers and volunteers in Aberdeen and we value each and every one of them. During the lockdowns we have experienced in the last year, young carers have had to overcome additional challenges in doing the great work they do looking after family, friends and loved ones.
“It’s great to formalise our appreciation, in partnership with Barnados and Barclays, with our new award. I’ve been given the task of selecting an overall winner which is no easy matter given the fantastic work all of our nominees do. No matter who wins, each of them deserve our utmost praise and gratitude.”
Each nominee will receive a certificate of recognition and the prize of the Aberdeen Gift Card for the overall winner and two runners up will have the additional benefit of helping the local economy as the city emerges from lockdown.
The public will have the opportunity to nominate a candidate for the next award ceremony in August by visiting:
