Doors Open Day statement

Aberdeen City Council has had some representations from affected families with regards to the Doors Open Day event scheduled, which would have included Aberdeen Crematorium as it did last year. These Doors Open events take place every year and allow access to several City Council premises by any member of the public.

Due to the timing of the event, and as a mark of respect to families affected by historical practices at Hazlehead Crematorium, we have taken the decision to remove the Crematorium from this year’s Doors Open Day schedule.

There are several other City Council buildings taking part in Doors Open Day 2016 on Saturday 10 September and they include:

The Tolbooth Museum, Castle Street, AB10 1FY

Built as the town’s prison, court house and toll collection point, The Tolbooth is 400 years old this year and a special set of events will be on throughout the day to celebrate;

Town House, Castle Street, AB10 1FY

Explore the main civic rooms and beautiful staircase. From 3pm-4pm, there will be a special talk by Iain Esslemont, architect, and Douglas Campbell, Aberdeen City Heritage Trust, in the Town and County Hall on the ornate and unique craftsmanship discovered during the recent roof works;

Townhouse Extension, Broad Street, AB10 1FY

Access from Broad Street (steps) or Queen St (level). The principle space within the modern extension to the Town House, including the Council Chamber, can be viewed;

Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives, Town House, Castle Street, AB10 1FY

Home to one of the most important sets of Burgh records in Scotland which were recognised by UNESCO in 2013 as part of the World Heritage Project;

Marischal College, Broad Street, AB10 1AB

The public reception areas and the quadrangle will be open;

Seventeen Belmont Street, 17 Belmont Street, AB10 1JR

Formerly One Up Records, Seventeen was established as a creative hub in 2013 to support new and emerging artists in Aberdeen and is now home to MAKE Aberdeen, Aberdeen International Youth Festival, cultural offices and two exhibition spaces. Seventeen will showcase a residency by Gabi Reith during Doors Open Day;

Beach Ballroom, Beach Promenade, AB24 5NR

With its steel-sprung dance floor that is still one of Scotland’s finest, this is a place of nostalgia for generations of Aberdonians. There will be displays and an audio visual presentation of the history and plans for the future of the building;

Rosemount Community Centre, Belgrave Terrace, AB25 2NS

There will be a variety of activities and demonstrations on from 10am to 4pm, along with conducted tours giving a brief history of the building.
