Family fun day offers a glimpse inside Aberdeen Treasure Hub

A family fun day will mark the official opening of the multi-million pound Aberdeen Treasure Hub on Saturday 19 November.

The local community is invited to join in the fun and to watch the Leader of Aberdeen City Council Councillor Jenny Laing, cut a ribbon at 10.15am to officially open the centre at Granitehill Road, Northfield. The family fun day will run from 10am until 2pm.

Aberdeen Treasure Hub – the name suggested and chosen for the centre by the local community – is designed to be a collections store facility, which includes a public exhibition and activity space. It will be a focal point for increasing opportunities for people to engage with arts and heritage.

All the family fun events relate to the opening display titled Creature Creations, which features animal-themed objects and artworks from the city’s collections, alongside a fabulous snake created by pupils at Muirfield School as part of the ‘Alchemy’ schools project. This will be a chance for visitors to meet Aberdeen Treasure Hub staff and find out more about what will be housed there in the future.

Leader of Aberdeen City Council Councillor Jenny Laing said: “This is a major investment in the people of Northfield and their local community.

“Aberdeen Treasure Hub is not only a state-of-art centre which will be home to the city's collections while they are not on display, it will also provide opportunities for creative engagement for local residents.

“There has been a great deal of engagement with local schools and the wider community and I look forward to welcoming a great many of them when we open the doors of the Treasure Hub to the public for the very first time this weekend.”

Aimed at all ages the fun day offers the chance to:

get creative with animal themed arts and crafts including paper bag puppet making, origami and drawing; watch graphic artist Katie Guthrie create a live drawing of Aberdeen Treasure Hub’s first event as it happens; take part in games and play with animal toys; delve into an Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums Treasure Box and handle real collection objects and artworks; hear tunes from local DJ’s courtesy of Station House Media Unit (SHMU); see and handle beautiful birds of prey with local bird rescue organisation 2 Wit 2 Woo; take home an animal balloon model; transform into an animal and have your face painted with help from talented artist Ulianka.

Light refreshments will be available.
