Festive Jobs Fair to promote scores of vacancies

The first Christmas jobs fair to take place in Aberdeen since 2010 will be held next month as part of the Progress Through Positive Partnerships project.
A number of high profile companies have companies have signed up so far, with more expected to join. Jobs range from retail and hospitality, to the armed forces, driving, and the care sector. Seasonal and permanent roles will be on offer.
The Progress Through Positive Partnerships Christmas jobs fair, which takes place in the Town House from 10am to 1pm on 18 October, is a joint ACC/DWP initiative.
It has attracted employers including Marks and Spencer, Debenhams, Asda, Compass Group, Smyth’s Toys, Ladbrokes, Primark, Hermes, Marriott Hotels, First Bus, Stagecoach, British Army, The Royal Air Force, Driver Hire, and Paramount Care.
Progress Through Positive Partnerships keyworkers will also be at the fair and will be seeking to sign up participants for the project. Part-funded by the European Structural Fund (ESF), the project, which forms part of the City Centre Masterplan, is designed to provide participants with support and tailored assistance to develop employment and vocational skills.
Councillor Yvonne Allan, Aberdeen City Council’s Communities, Housing and Infrastructure convener said: “A prosperous future for Aberdeen is reliant on giving each individual the best opportunity to fulfil their potential and improve their lives. This jobs fair and the Progress Through Positive Partnerships project is about investing in people to develop the city’s workforce.
“Progress Through Positive Partnerships will see Aberdeen City Council work in partnership with a range of training and development organisations to provide increased employability services and positive outcomes across the city. It will improve the co-ordination of service provision and ensure that those in need of it receive local support tailored specifically to address their individual needs.”
Department for Work and Pensions partnership manager Kirsty Jarman said: “There’s a great deal of excitement among city employers about this Christmas Jobs Fair. It’s the first one to take place in Aberdeen for a number of years and we’ve had a great response from businesses which want to be a part of this partnership event between DWP and Aberdeen City Council. The event has attracted some major organisations which are keen to recruit new staff.
“The jobs fair presents a great opportunity not only for companies to find staff for the festive period, but also for job seekers to find temporary work – some of which could lead to permanent positions.”
Progress Through Positive Partnerships is a £2.2million project, which has secured £880,000 from the European Structural Fund. Participants will benefit from a wide range of training options in areas including engineering skills, welding, care, computing skills, one to one support, CV building, job seeking skills, interview skills, literacy, numeracy and language support, media skills, cookery and outdoor pursuits.
