Final countdown as lucky ticket holders prepare for Aberdeen Art Gallery opening
01 November 2019
Aberdeen Art Gallery will roll out the welcome mat to more than 5,500 visitors this weekend as the historic venue reopens to the public.
Access this Saturday and Sunday (2-3 November) will be for those who have pre-booked, with all of the free tickets quickly snapped up when they were released last month. The timed slots are in place to ensure the best experience for visitors.
From Monday (4 November) regular opening times will be 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm. Admission is free.
The reopening week has brought local, national and international attention for the landmark Aberdeen City Council project.
The £34.6m redevelopment including investment in the fabric of the buildings including a re-imagined Remembrance Hall, refurbished Cowdray Hall, new exhibition and collection display galleries, improved visitor facilities and an enhanced activity programme.
Councillor Marie Boulton, Aberdeen City Council’s culture spokesperson, said: “On the eve of the public opening there is real excitement. We promised a world class visitor attraction for Aberdeen and that is what has been delivered.
“The reopening week has been an opportunity to showcase the incredible end result but also to reflect on the experiences of a once in a lifetime project for all those who have been closest to it. It has been quite emotional to see how much the Gallery means to so many people.
“On behalf of Aberdeen City Council, my thanks go to the dedicated and passionate Gallery staff who have worked so hard to get to this point and to the many others from both inside and outside the Council who have played an important part in a hugely significant project.
“The congratulations have been well earned and the real celebration will be when the first visitors cross the threshold and rediscover their Gallery. We set out to create a gallery for the people and it will come to life this weekend when thousands get their first taste of the revitalised Aberdeen Art Gallery.”
