Glitterpick blasting through city on Friday

A Glitterpick involving schools and community groups is to blast through 24 places around Aberdeen in a 24 hour period – on 24 June.

The litter pick event, which has been organised by Aberdeen City Council’s environmental team, is designed to help make the city sparkle more in the summer months.

A total of 24-plus groups are taking part and the first starts at midnight on Thursday (23 June) and the last finishes at midnight on Friday (24 June).

They include Aberdeen Inspired, different teams from the council’s environmental service, Powis residents, Friends of Seaton Park, Oldmachar Academy, Bridge of Don Academy, Braehead Primary, Kittybrewster Primary, Hanover Primary, Tillydrone Community Flat, Riverbank School, Northfield Academy, Hazlehead Primary, Airyhall Primary, AUSA, Friends of Union Terrace Gardens, Marine Lab, DolphinWatch, Aberdeen Boat Club, Ruthrieston Residents’ Association, Friends of Duthie Park, and Friends of Aberdeen Beach (FAB).

Aberdeen City Council Leader Councillor Jenny Laing said: “Our communities and groups do a fantastic amount of work already helping to keep our city looking beautiful so it’s with special thanks they are all making the effort on Friday.

“We are all responsible to ensuring Aberdeen is keep clean and green by not littering and putting rubbish into the proper recycling bins but imagine what a huge difference there is when folk make a little bit more of an effort.

“This effort can be as simple as rather than being annoyed at a drinks can outside our own gate we could pick it up and put it in our own recycling box, or a bigger effort such as the power of good work dozens of groups carry out by organising litter picks.

“These group efforts help to foster a bit of pride in your local area which we’re keen to encourage, and events such as the Glitterpick really do make a huge difference to a local community.”

The Glitterpick comes ahead of Phase 1 of a regeneration programme for Union Street, being taken forward as part of the City Centre Masterplan.

The work, due to start later this year, will include a deep clean of the Union Street streetscape and public realm, the upgrading of street furniture, and the formation of a dedicated team to clean, fix and paint any fixtures or features which fall into a poor state.

The programme will be jointly led by the City Council and Aberdeen Inspired, which operates the Business Improvement District.
