Hazlehead Academy Youth Team shortlisted for national award

Hazlehead Academy Youth Work Team members, have been nominated for a prestigious national award for their work with local young people in partnership with Hazlehead Academy teaching staff.
The youth workers at Hazlehead Academy are a kind-hearted bunch according to the young people they work with. The team based within the school are all about helping students to be the best version of themselves. It’s clear the small team, made up of Jenni, Eve and Tasha, are having a big impact at the school.
The team are involved in a range of activities including drop in sessions each day, running the LGBT+ Alliance Group and supporting the Mentors in Violence Prevention programme. They’ve supported students to get involved in things outside of their comfort zone, whether that’s travelling to Glasgow to attend a learning festival or showcasing work in front of others.
Oliwia Trojanowska, aged 16, who nominated the team for this award, said:
“The youth workers have helped me remarkably as I used to be an incredibly shy girl but with a lot of their support I have now been able to create projects and speak out in front of many people about the things I’m passionate about. Overall the team is a great inspiration to all and they have done so many extraordinary things for us, so what better thing to pay them back than giving them a chance to see how amazing they are.”
Councillor John Wheler, Education Operational Delivery Convener, “This is wonderful news; the Hazlehead Academy Youth Work are deservedly receiving national recognition for their excellent work. Aberdeen City Council is committed to equality and to improved outcomes for children and young people and Jenni, Eve and Tasha are doing a great job in helping fulfil these ambitions Hazlehead. I wish them ever success at next week’s event in Glasgow”.

The National Youth Work Awards 2019 are all about celebrating the power of incredible youth work and the vital role of Scotland’s 70,000 youth work volunteers and staff in the lives of our young people. This national event is co-designed with young people, who have been involved in the judging and the planning of the night.
The winner will be announced at an Awards dinner on Wednesday 13 March 2019 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Glasgow, hosted by broadcaster and pantomime villan, Grant Stott and Richard Lochhead MSP, Minister for Higher Education, Further Education and Youth Work.
