Hydrogen opportunities to take centre stage at Aberdeen festival

17 July 2019

Aberdeen will play host to a Hydrogen Festival this autumn as the opportunities to embrace the transition to a low carbon economy are put in the spotlight.

The festival will run from 30 September to 4 October and will feature a range of events tailored towards a business audience.

As part of the programme Aberdeen City Council will co-host a one-day conference in conjunction with Pale Blue Dot Energy and ERM and with additional support from Opportunity North East, Scottish Enterprise and the Oil and Gas Technology Centre. The event will take place on 1 October 2019 at the Hilton Treetops Hotel in Aberdeen.

This event also forms the Hydrogen Transport Economy (HyTrEc)2 Project mid-term conference and received EU funding from Interreg North Sea Region.

Councillor Philip Bell, Aberdeen City Council’s environmental spokesperson, said: “Hydrogen presents an exciting opportunity to achieve the global energy transition to a low carbon economy.

“With its history of innovation and technology development for the oil and gas industry, the North Sea Region aims to be at the forefront of this transition creating new opportunities and generating employment.

“We look forward to welcoming delegates to the conference and to the festival, underlining our vision to be a key player in the roll-out of hydrogen technology.”

The complimentary one-day conference will explore the vision and opportunity for hydrogen as well as its production and applications. The programme will feature representatives from several hydrogen projects throughout the North Sea Region who will introduce their projects as well as share key learnings from their emergence in this market. The event will focus on the opportunities for development of the regional supply chain.

Throughout the day there will be opportunities to engage with representatives from both public and private sector developing the hydrogen opportunity.

The wider Hydrogen Festival will also include practical examples on hydrogen deployment, the European picture for transport, heat and power, power to gas workshops, and will showcase a hydrogen car from the Shell eco-marathon and Arcola schools challenge. The festival will also provide the chance to view and drive hydrogen vehicles. The Energy Observer solar powered hydrogen boat will also be in Aberdeen during the week.

The week is aimed at those wanting to understand what is happening in this exciting market, how the technology is evolving, and some of the current projects being developed.

Full details of the 1 October conference, Hydrogen: A business opportunity for the North Sea Region, will be shared in the coming weeks and will include the opportunity to register to attend here.
