New Stoneywood School backed by councillors

Councillors have agreed to progress plans for a new £13million school in the Stoneywood area of Aberdeen.

Members of the Education and Children's Services Committee were given feedback at a meeting today (June 2) on a statutory public consultation process for the new building on the site of the former Bankhead Academy.

The new development is due for completion in time for the 2017/18 school session, which starts in August 2017.

The project will also involve the re-zoning of land to the north of the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness road, currently in the catchment area of Brimmond School, with effect from August 2015.

Funding for the new Stoneywood School has already been allocated in Aberdeen City Council's five-year Capital Programme.

The majority of those who responded to the consultation were in favour of both the school and the preferred site.

Councillor Angela Taylor, Convener of Education and Children's Services, said: "We are very pleased to see this project moving forward. It is one of several new schools that are being built as part of our capital programme, in addition to a new academy for the south of the city."
