New recycling scheme being rolled out across Aberdeen

11 March 2016

A new mixed recycling scheme is to be rolled out city wide as Aberdeen gets one step closer to becoming a zero waste city.

Aberdeen City Council is now providing new bins for those in tenements and flats to make recycling easier. The blue-lidded mixed recycling bins allow residents to recycle paper, cardboard, plastics, glass and metals, all in the same bin close to their home. Residents can now also recycle plastic pots, tubs and trays and cardboard food and drink cartons. The bins have already introduced in Bridge of Don and Seaton with the rest of the city set to receive them over the coming months.Throughout the rest of 2016, close to 2000 communal mixed recycling bins will be installed in Aberdeen, improving the recycling service available to more than 40,000 properties.Aberdeen City Council Zero Waste Management Sub-committee Convener Councillor Jean Morrison said:"We are working towards Aberdeen becoming a zero waste city and the mixed recycling service will play a major role in that by making it easier for residents to recycle."The introduction of this service is a very positive step forward as the Council works towards meeting the needs of householders in multi-occupancy properties."In most places, the bins have been located close to general waste bins, so you don't have to walk any further to do your recycling than you do to throw away your rubbish. I'd encourage householders to use the new bins and help boost Aberdeen's recycling rate."Most multi-occupancy buildings in Aberdeen are expected to have the mixed recycling service by the end of the year. It will be rolled out by area in four phases:

Phase 1 started in February 2016, and will cover Bridge of Don, Seaton, Hanover and Torry. Phase 2, starting April/May 2016, will cover Cove, Kincorth, Garthdee, Braeside, Cults, Peterculter, Ferryhill, Westend, Hazlehead and Kingswells. Phase 3, starting in summer 2016, will cover Rosemount, Mastrick, Northfield, Summerhill, Bucksburn and Dyce. Phase 4, starting in autumn 2016, will cover Ashgrove, Froghall, George Street, Hilton, Old Aberdeen, Tillydrone and Woodside.

Residents with kerbside recycling collections will get the mixed recycling service from mid-2017. The existing 70-litre bag and box system will be replaced with a 240-litre wheeled bin, more than trebling kerbside recycling capacity
