Pupils and teachers thanked as exam results are announced
06 August 2019
SQA examination results released today (Tuesday 6 August) reveal that young people in Aberdeen schools are performing well, with overall SQA pass rates sustained.
There is evidence of young people being presented for a wider range of qualifications this year with more flexible routes such as engagement with the Foundation Apprenticeships which has increased.
There has been a significant improvement in pupils attaining grades A-C in Advanced Highers.
Attainment in S4 English National 5 remains statistically unchanged at 87.31% (A-C). The figure for S4 National 5 Mathematics increased to 73.16% from 70.57% in 2018.
Cllr John Wheeler, Education Operational Delivery Convener, said: "I am pleased to see performance sustained across SQA measures, including S4 Maths National 5 and Advanced Higher.
“I appreciate this that is only part of the picture across the City and look forward to reviewing our Insight data, which shows a fuller view of attainment and achievement for our pupils, upon publication in September 2019.”
Cllr Wheeler added: ““The dedication, enthusiasm and professional commitment shown throughout the year by pupils, head teachers, teachers and support staff is to be commended. This year has once again been a challenging one for schools who continue to manage a level of vacancy in key subjects.
“We continue to be innovative in our approach to education and supporting our children and young people. Free school meals in holiday periods, involving children in decision making and promoting children’s rights through our involvement with Unicef UK in working to make Aberdeen a Child Friendly City.”
Aberdeen City Council Co-Leader Cllr Jenny Laing said: “My congratulations go out to all our young people who have completed this year’s SQA examinations. An enormous amount of hard work has been put in and today is the culmination of that.
“As well as praising the pupils for their efforts I would also like to thank the staff in our schools for their hard work and commitment to supporting children and young people through their school journey.”
“As we are demonstrating through our Local Outcome Improvement Plan, we are totally committed to ensuring our children have the best foundations by removing barriers to attainment and achievement”.
