Second café culture trial in Aberdeen city centre

16 March 2016

Businesses in the Belmont Street area are being asked if they would like to take part in a possible second trial to create a café culture in Aberdeen city centre.

Aberdeen City Council received positive feedback from the public and businesses on the first trial held last summer/early autumn and is considering if a second trial would be feasible.

If a second trial was to go ahead, it would follow a different format:

* Weekends only

* No traffic access between closure hours (except emergency vehicles)

* Potential longer hours.

Aberdeen City Council created the space last year in the Belmont Street/Little Belmont Street area in response to café owners' requests.

Aberdeen City Council Deputy Leader Marie Boulton said: "The first trial last year got positive feedback for having a nice family-friendly atmosphere which added a good feeling to the city centre.

"We'd like to find out whether businesses would like to take part in a possible second café culture trial."

It should be emphasised that no decision has been made whether a second trial will go ahead. Once feedback is received from interested parties, a decision will be made and communicated with all businesses in the area.

Any business interested in taking part in a second trial or would like to give feedback on the proposal should contact Emily Anderson by Friday 25 March, 2016, on emianderson@aberdeencity.gov.uk or 01224 522973.

The feasibility of a trial with the City Council for the café zone was put forward by business organisation Aberdeen Inspired after learning of a demand from the city centre business community.

Aberdeen Inspired is the banner under which the Aberdeen BID (Business Improvement District) operates. It is a business-led initiative within the city centre in which levy payers within the BID zone contribute. Proceeds are used to fund projects designed to improve the business district and driving footfall to the zone. For further information on Aberdeen Inspired, visitwww.aberdeeninspired.com
