Simplyhealth Great Aberdeen Run to showcase city landmarks

09 August 2018
Excitement is building for this month’s Simplyhealth Great Aberdeen Run – with city landmarks to be showcased to an international audience when thousands of runners gather in the north-east on August 26.
Starting on Union Street participants in the half marathon and 10k events will get to experience the incredible atmosphere and roar of the crowds before heading to Aberdeen Harbour, the beach Esplanade and across the Bridge of Don and the historic Brig o' Balgownie.
This year, for the first-time, the route for the half marathon heads through a new section in the beautiful award-winning Seaton Park. It will then flow back into the city taking in iconic landmarks including Old Aberdeen, Marischal College, His Majesty's Theatre and back to the finish on Union Street.
Aberdeen City Council Co-Leader Cllr Jenny Laing said: “We are pleased the Simplyhealth Great Aberdeen Run will pass through Seaton Park, a new addition as a backdrop this year. The route will be a wonderful showcase for the beautiful parks and gardens of which Aberdeen is so proud.
“Through our City Centre Masterplan Aberdeen City Council is committed to making Aberdeen an even more vibrant place to live, work and visit – and a year-round events programme is integral to that. The Great Aberdeen Run is a key event in our city events programme and with thousands of runners participating in the races we want to show them as much of our city as we can.
“We work with city partners such as the Friends of Seaton Park to raise the city’s position as a must-visit destination for high-profile cultural and sporting events. There’s so much to see and do – and August 26 will be a great platform for the city. “
A spokesperson from Friends of Seaton Park said “We are delighted that the park is being used for the Great Aberdeen Run. Following our success in last year’s Britain in Bloom competition, where we were awarded the judges discretionary award for Parks and Green Spaces, we are proud to showcase this beautiful part of Aberdeen and keen to use Seaton Park for events in the future. We want to welcome both the runners and spectators and hope they enjoy their visit to the park.”
The Great Aberdeen Run is delivered in partnership with Aberdeen City Council, VisitAberdeenshire, Aberdeen Inspired, Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce and is being supported by the Aberdeen City Centre Masterplan.
Alongside the two main races there will also be a family run so the younger runners in the city can take part on the day.
