Sunnybank pupils learn how to become global citizens

Sunnybank school pupils were paid a visit by a mobile venue yesterday (Monday 12 September) that teaches people how education can make everyone become global citizens.

The roadshow arrived at the Aberdeen school as part of Global Citizenship Month and will eventually take up a two day residency at the Scottish Learning Festival on 21 and 22 September at Glasgow’s SECC. The event will be attended by some of Scotland’s football stars.

Sunnybank pupils and visitors, along with other schools in Scotland, were asked to vote on which global goal is most important to them. The results will be announced at the Glasgow event.

The International Development Education Association of Scotland (IDEAS) is behind the tour and is a network of organisations and individuals involved in education for global citizenship across Scotland.

Elaine Trail, Rights Respecting Schools Award Co-ordinator Teacher at Sunnybank School, said: “It’s a real coup for Sunnybank to be hosting the Global Bus as we have been working really hard on global citizenship and children’s rights over the last couple of years. Our children are excited to learn more about the Global Goals and the world we live in.”

Councillor Angela Taylor, Aberdeen City Council Education and Children’s Services Committee Convenor, said: “Aberdeen City Council has been at the forefront of promoting children’s rights with initiatives such as the Imagineers which we developed with the Scottish Children’s Parliament. So we are fully supportive of the hard work Sunnybank School has put in to become one of a select handful of Scottish schools taking part in this nationally important event.”
