Tour of Britain provides exciting opportunities for businesses

18 August 2021

Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire businesses are being invited to saddle up and help to turn the region into a cycling hub when the Tour of Britain races through the region on the 12 September 2021.

After top cyclists battle it out in the final stage sprinting across Aberdeenshire, the UK’s biggest and most prestigious cycle race will see this year’s overall champion be crowned in Aberdeen, at the end of the most northerly final ever to feature in the Tour of Britain.

Businesses are asked to create a buzz and show their support by dressing their storefronts with a cycling design or theme – the more creative the better!

A range of top prizes are up for grabs for competing businesses and have been selected to help winners promote their businesses in the region. Prizes include for Aberdeen City businesses roundabout branding, a digital campaign, and radio advertising; and six winning Aberdeenshire businesses will receive a prize to the value of £1,000 to spend on advertising of their choice, in the North-east.

Aberdeen City Council Leader Jenny Laing said: “Welcoming the Tour of Britain to the region is a huge coup for the city and it provides a great opportunity for local businesses to promote their goods and services to both national and international audiences. Therefore, I want to encourage businesses to get involved with this initiative so we can transform the city into a vibrant and exciting cycle hub.

“It’s clear that, as well as being a massive attraction, the Tour of Britain will have a huge part to play in our post-Covid economic recovery plans. Through our Aberdeen 365 Events Programme and City Centre Masterplan, Aberdeen City Council is committed to making Aberdeen a vibrant and attractive place to live, work and visit.”

Aberdeenshire Council leader Cllr Andy Kille said: “The eyes of the world will be on the North-east and that gives us a tremendous opportunity to celebrate and promote the wider region. I am confident that businesses across the region will want to play their part in decorating their windows with colourful Tour of Britain displays which will make all of our communities feel part of this magnificent cycling event.”

Businesses are also being encouraged to provide bespoke offers and promotions for the day to encourage spectators to support local businesses and stay longer in the city on the day. Aberdeen City Council will support promotions offers across digital platforms. A business toolkit is also available including useful tools such as a social media icon, downloadable poster, email signature strip and a website banner.

Highlights of every stage of the Tour Series will be shown on ITV4, with programmes also available on demand via the ITV Hub.
