Aberdeen joins international remembrance of workers

25 April 2019

Aberdeen City Council will help mark International Workers' Memorial Day at a series of events.

The worldwide awareness day falls on Sunday (April 28) and was introduced as a day of remembrance for those who have lost their life at work or suffered work related injury or illness.

The Council has worked in partnership with Trade Unions to organise a programme leading up to Sunday.

Councillor Jenny Laing, Co-Leader of Aberdeen City Council, will join trade union representatives for a ceremony at the rose mound in Duthie Park from 9.30am on Friday (April 26). Council workers have also been invited to join a one minute’s silence at 11am on Friday.

Lord Provost Barney Crockett will be in attendance on Sunday at the Persley for a public commemoration.

Cllr Laing said: “The events leading up to International Workers’ Memorial Day provide an opportunity to join countries across the world in remembering those who have lost their lives and been impacted in many other ways due to work related injuries or illness.

“These are always poignant occasions but with a very positive message about the positive strides that have been taken to ensure workers are protected.

“At Aberdeen City Council we are committed to the health, safety and wellbeing of our staff and as we approach IWMD it is important to reiterate our determination to keep that at the top of the agenda as an organisation as we champion safe practices and working environments for employees and all those who work in the city.”

On Tuesday (April 30) Clydeside Action on Asbestos will hold an annual memorial service, remembering those who have lost their lives to asbestos related illness, at Johston Gardens in Aberdeen. The ceremony will begin at noon.
