Annual Budget agreed to bring Tall Ships event to Aberdeen in 2022

Councillors today pledged to commit £2million over the next four years to bring the Tall Ships event to Aberdeen in five years.

Members of the Finance, Policy and Resources committee agreed to build £500,000 into the Council’s annual budget each year over the next four years to bring the event back to the city in 2022.

The motion was agreed as part of the Council’s Aberdeen 365 strategy, a City Centre Masterplan initiative which seeks to provide a framework for the attraction of events to Aberdeen and to deliver a varied programme of high-profile regional and community cultural, sporting and entertainment events to the city to boost local business and tourism.

Aberdeen City Council Finance, Policy and Resources Committee Convener Councillor Willie Young said: “Today’s pledge puts in place the financial measures necessary to deliver this high profile event for Aberdeen in 2022 – one which many residents will have happy memories of in the past.

“It shows our firm commitment to create opportunities for economic development by putting Aberdeen on the map as an international destination and signifies that we are open and ready for business.”

As part of the strategy, officers are working with event organisers and partner agencies to deliver a round of the annual cycling Tour Series in May 2017.

This premier road cycling event will give Scottish cycling fans the opportunity to see Britain’s top teams and riders competing in Aberdeen for the first time.

In addition, the Nuart Festival will bring a splash of colour to the city through professional street art projects in 2017.

And the Great Aberdeen Run, another Masterplan-backed event will be held for the first time in Aberdeen on 27 August 2017.
