Aberdeen’s role as hydrogen hub in the spotlight at city festival
26 September 2019
A packed week of events and activities will showcase hydrogen opportunities as Aberdeen embraces low carbon opportunities.
The inaugural Hydrogen Festival begins on Tuesday (1st October) and will run through to 4 October, with a programme tailored to a business audience.
As part of the programme Aberdeen City Council will co-host a one-day conference (Hydrogen: A Business Opportunity for the North Sea Region) in conjunction with Pale Blue Dot Energy and ERM and with additional support from Opportunity North East, Scottish Enterprise and the Oil and Gas Technology Centre. The event will take place on Tuesday (1 October) at the Hilton Treetops Hotel in Aberdeen and also forms the Hydrogen Transport Economy (HyTrEc)2 Project mid-term conference and received EU funding from Interreg North Sea Region.
The conference will feature 11 expert speakers, covering hydrogen policy and opportunities as well as highlighting successful projects, with workshops on a range of topics including hydrogen for heat and vehicle deployments, green hydrogen production, supply chain and training. Tours to view hydrogen related innovations will conclude the conference.
Councillor Philip Bell, Aberdeen City Council’s hydrogen spokesperson, said: “The Hydrogen Festival promises to be an informative and inspiring week and we look forward to welcoming delegates from near and far.
“The global energy transition to a low carbon economy is quite rightly a focal point at present and Aberdeen is already embracing exciting opportunities. This region has a track record as an energy industry innovator and once again we aim to lead from the front as hydrogen opens up new possibilities.”
The free one-day conference will explore the vision and opportunity for hydrogen as well as its production and applications. The programme will feature representatives from several hydrogen projects throughout the North Sea Region who will introduce their projects as well as share key learnings from their emergence in this market. The event will focus on the opportunities for development of the regional supply chain.
Throughout the day there will be opportunities to engage with representatives from both public and private sector.
The wider Hydrogen Festival will also include practical examples on hydrogen deployment, the European picture for transport, heat and power, power to gas workshops, and will showcase a hydrogen car from the Shell eco-marathon and Arcola schools challenge. The festival will also provide the chance to view and drive hydrogen vehicles.
