Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums offering fantastic traineeship opportunities for non-graduates

21 May 2018

Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums is today (Friday 18 May) looking for non-graduates with an interest in museums to step forward and apply for two paid learning placements with the city’s Art Gallery and Museums team.

The one-year programme begins in August / September and offers the successful applicants a foot in the door to the heritage sector at entry level.

Councillor Marie Boulton, Aberdeen City Council’s cultural spokeswoman, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the successful candidates to work alongside museum professionals and learn a range of skills including collections care, marketing and audience development, visitor services and public engagement.

“Importantly, the programme offers us the opportunity to bring diversity and new skills to our museum and galleries team by bypassing the traditional requirements for academic qualifications and volunteering experience.

“Who knows? Perhaps a visitor to our museums and Treasure Hub might end up working with us at an incredibly exciting time in Aberdeen’s cultural life”.

The ‘Skills for the Future’ programme is funded by the National Lottery, via the Heritage Lottery Fund, and is managed by Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS). Learners will complete an accredited vocational programme designed to offer a new entry route into museums work.

The deadline for applications is 9am on 30th May 2018 and people can apply by visiting: https://museumsgalleriesscotland.org.uk/jobs/

John McLeish, Interim CEO of Museums Galleries Scotland, said: “MGS has been running intern and trainee programmes since 2011, building on our successes and learning from each iteration.

“Skills for Success is the most ambitious, open accessible programme yet; introducing new methods of recruitment and management level positions. We are delighted to be working with Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums to attract new, diverse groups of learners to the sector.”
