Thousands to gather for Aberdeen’s Highland Games

Large crowds will flock to Hazlehead Park on Sunday (17 June 2018) for Aberdeen’s Highland Games.

This year’s gathering, the latest on Aberdeen City Council’s growing events programme, will include a live stage show by children’s TV favourite Mr Bloom to add to the popular mix of traditional events, entertainment and activities for all the family to enjoy.

Now in its 58th year, spectators will be treated to heavy events, solo piping and pipe band competitions, drum major competitions, track and field events, highland dancing and the Scottish tug-o-war championship (725kg).

Cllr Douglas Lumsden, Aberdeen City Council Co-Leader, said: “Aberdeen’s Highland Games is always a highlight on our summer city events programme.

“Regularly attracting over 10,000 visitors, Aberdeen’s Highland Games is a special combination of traditional highland games events, alongside family entertainment making it a wonderful day out.

“For decades it has been popular with local residents as well as visitors from far and near, making it a very important part of the city calendar.

“As a Council we have invested significantly in bringing new events to Aberdeen – including Spectra, Nuart Aberdeen, Tour Series cycling and the Great Aberdeen Run – but the traditional events are the foundations we are building upon and it is fantastic to see the Highland Games thriving.

“Events, new and traditional, are vitally important to our ambitions for enhancing Aberdeen’s reputation as a destination as well as fostering the community spirit that is so strong amongst our residents. It promises to be a brilliant day.”

Mr Bloom will deliver his one-man show encompassing all the familiar songs, stories, games from his TV show in an engaging, entertaining and educational performance.

Segways, giant inflatables, climbing wall, face painting and walkabout balloon modellers are all included in the entrance price.

Visitors will be invited to challenge themselves at the TechFest tent with K’nex, lighthouses and dinosaurs, and at the Aberdeen Science Centre “Build It” challenge.

There will also be shows throughout the day from The Critter Keeper and Medieval Realm.

There will also be charity and trade stalls to browse, food and drink available to purchase, a beer tent (over-18s only) and a fun fair.

Due to popular demand, new for 2018 is the dedicated dogs area, where visitors can bring their four-legged friends to enjoy their very own refreshments and entertainment area.

Aberdeen’s Highland Games takes place on Sunday 17 June, 10.00am – 5.30pm at Hazlehead Park.
