Aberdeen Maritime Museum reopens to the public
21 July 2015
Aberdeen Maritime Museum has reopened to the public today (Wednesday 22 July) in time for families to enjoy free fun drop-in sessions.
The creative sessions will take place between 10.30am-12.30pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays through to and including Saturday 08 August.
Artist Emma-Leigh McKay will be on hand to help participants craft their very own masterpieces. Opportunities include making colourful paper creations inspired by Japanese paper crafts, collaging decorative trophies and printing postcards to send to friends and family. There is also the chance to build a load carrying ship that will sail the oceans of the world in the Tea Merchant's Challenge.
These activities are aimed at families with primary-school aged children. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Make Deck is a vibrant new programme of creative, artist led workshops for young people aged 14-19 years-old, which offers young people the chance to try something different, meet others with similar interests and have plenty of fun.
Workshops will take place on each Friday from 1.30pm-3.30pm from 24 July until Friday 07 August. These free workshops have been devised by members of the Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums Young People's Collective and developed with professional artists.
Artist Natalie Kerr and members of the Young People's Collective are inviting anyone aged 14-19 years-old to take part in the Make Deck Mystery on 24 July. Explore the museum through quirky hands-on activities, puzzles and challenge on this mysterious journey where there is treasure to be claimed. Individuals can come along or friends can take part as a team.
Develop skills in smart phone photography on 31 July, and make unusual patterns by harnessing the creative potential of chance at The Luck of the Dice drop-in session on 07 August.
Aberdeen City Council's Convener of Education and Children's Services Councillor Angela Taylor said: "I am delighted that the maritime museum has reopened so young people and children and families can enjoy a fabulous fun and free creative programme of events over the summer holidays."
