Aberdeen Women’s Alliance to host International Women’s Day events

A series of events to celebrate International Women’s Day 2021 (Monday 08 March) will be hosted by Aberdeen Women’s Alliance next week.
Listed below are some of the events taking place to celebrate International Women’s Day for 2021.
In conversation with Nolwazi Nadia Ncube: Period Poverty, Policy, Technology and Activism
Monday 08 March – 11am-12noon
Nolwazi Nadia Ncube talks menstrual activism. In 2015 she launched Save the girl child movement, a charity in Zimbabwe to provide sanitary wear to women and girls.
Nadia tells us about how the charity's programme has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, touching on issues of period poverty, sustainability, and menstrual waste. She will also talk about how community-based organisations differ from international non-governmental organisations.
Nadia has been a PhD student with the Department of Sociology at Aberdeen University since 2017.

The Depute Provost of Aberdeen Jennifer Stewart, who will attend the in conversation with Nolwazi Nadia Ncube event, said: “The online events to mark International Women’s Day offer the opportunity for us all to learn from others, exchange views and by doing so raise awareness of gender bias and inequality and encourage all people to call it out.”
Fiona Rennie, Aberdeen Women’s Alliance convener said: “Aberdeen Women's Alliance is looking forward to these online events. The programme covers a range of topics which share IWD2021 theme choose to challenge. The presentations and Q&As will have a local, national and international themes. Choose to challenge and come along.”
Writing Hame: An audience with three incredible poets.Monday 08 March – 5pm-6.30pm
The event will feature special performances from Noon Salah Eldin, Jo Gilbert and Nasim Rebecca Asl, and will be hosted by Molly McLachlan.

Glasgow Women’s Library Story Café
Wednesday 10 March – 5.45pm-7.30pm
Aberdeen Women’s Alliance is also collaborating with Glasgow Women’s Library will celebrate the women who have shared their explorations of both the natural and the built corners of our world and rediscover the joy of being read to.
From tenacious trailblazers and adventurers to poets of sea, city and forest, women’s writing is rich with stories of expeditions and journeys into different landscapes that have inspired others and changed the way we see the world we live in.
This event will take place online on zoom. The event is free and for women only (12+). Women-only events are inclusive of Trans and Intersex women, as well as non-binary and gender fluid people who are comfortable in a space that centres the experience of women.

Marischal College, Aberdeen City Council’s Headquarters, will be lit up purple in support of IWD2021 on Monday (08 March).
The IWD events hosted by Aberdeen Women’s Alliance are supported by Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeen Trades Union Council (ATUC) and Grampian Regional Equality Council (GREC).
